The Afterlife of Billy Fingers
At a tender age of 4 years old, I became terrified when my Mother revealed that we all eventually will die, including me. But, what happens after that?
Fast forward to when I began to read “The Afterlife of Billy Fingers”, by Annie Kagan. The story is one everyone can relate to. We all know a “Billy Fingers” to which a horrible fate befalls him. This one is a little different.
Billy Fingers dies in a car accident. A short time after this, he makes contact with his sister Annie, who is still on earth. The two of them begin a new side to their relationship. He pops in unannounced, for the most part, as her pillar of strength and knowledge. She sees him as a hologram, a blue light. She hears him speak to her lovingly. She asks for proof of what he says, and he sets up synchronicities to validate his existence in the afterlife.
He begins his afterlife in a relaxed way, and rests. He is able to review his earth life in a high tech remote control theatre of which he can not tell distance, or size of such an instrument. Only that he is able to go down paths he never traveled in his earth life, and finds that they all had ultimately lead to the same place, at the end of his earth life.
He does not interact with his sister, Annie, on a regular basis. Billy Fingers explains that this is because he is only allowed to come when he is given permission. But finally, Billy reveals that “They” want Annie to write a book of the things he tells her. The book takes off from there.
This is a loving, sad, witty, intelligent, and compassionate book. Billy Fingers’ afterlife is described as having no judgment, only love, in an exponentially larger amount than we have ever known on this earth. It is a typical life on earth, and an unpredictable ‘afterlife’. It makes no excuses, should someone read it and find it unbelievable. The style in which it is written makes clear the message Billy Fingers intends to deliver.
The rest of the book describes Billy Fingers’ transformation from newly arrived soul to spirit form. The free will we have even there, in the afterlife, seems so all fulfilling to Billy Fingers.
I wanted the book to go on some more. I want to know more. There are things that are really unknowable for each of us in the afterlife. After reading and knowing “The Afterlife of Billy Fingers”, I am more comforted, and less fearful, of what my own “Afterlife” will bring me.
Bright Blessings,
~Michelle
